John Button received £789 for masonry work at Bowood, Wilts, between 1769 and 1777 (Archives, Marquess of Lansdowne, cited by Gunnis, 1968). The following year he was paid for carving two groups of colossal figures on the Strand and Bank fronts of Somerset House (1).
