Biographical Details
There has been speculation about the identity of this sculptor. Penny draws attention to G N Wright’s Historic Guide to Bath, 1864, 183, which described the monument to James Bosanquet, †1767, with its gradated relief of the Good Samaritan, as being ‘from the design and chisel of W. Carter’(1). Penny suggests this may be Thomas Carter II. A photograph of the monument in the Conway Library is, however signed W C, who might concievably be William Collins, for it bears a resemblance to his work in Magdalene College, Cambridge.
