Biographical Details The son of another Stephen Carpenter, he was apprenticed to Francis Cartwright of Bryanston in 1749. Between 1770 and 1775 he was the master-mason responsible for building Milton Abbey, Dorset, a house designed by Sir William Chambers. Lord Milton appears to have been dilatory in settling his accounts, for Gunnis writes that in 1774 Chambers was forced to inform him that ‘Carpenter has been with me and is much distressed for money to pay debts contracted’ (BM, Add MS 41,136, fol 165,169).This letter, dated 29 March 1774 describes problems over payments, but makes no mention of Carpenter.
