Biographical Details
He was employed at Ashburnham Place 1812-17, working under the direction of the architect, George Dance junior. His masonry work included turned and carved columns and ballusters for the gallery and grand staircase and ‘carving branch Leaf Pattern’ on the staircase. A letter to Lord Ashburnham of 26 April 1817 suggests that Carter managed the team, for it refers to payments made or due to other masons, particularly Thomas Nuttall and Joseph Dawes (Ashburnham Accts, ASH 2806, 8 Aug-12 Sept 1812, 5 Feb-2 July 1814, ASH 2812 19 April-21 Aug 1813).
