Biographical Details
Dossie notes that he was ‘apprentice to [Henry] Cheere’ in 1762, when on 3 June he won a premium from the Society of Arts for an ornamental composition in clay, awarded to sculptors under 19 (3). That year he gained a second premium for a clay model (1). A third premium came his way on 24 May 1765 (2). Dossie noted in his Memoirs that Carter was dead by 1782.
