Biographical Details
The son of Thomas Cartwright I and father of Thomas Cartwright III. His father was closely involved with the Masons’ Company and Joseph was made free of the Company by patrimony on 10 June 1673. He was admitted to the livery on 29 October 1674. He married Elizabeth Wigley of Camberwell on 23 August 1676, at which time he was living in the parish of St Olave, Southwark (Lic Vic Gen). Joseph probably assisted his father in the contracting business and succeeded him as Master Mason at London Bridge in July 1673, holding the post for 11 years until June 1684. In this capacity he was paid £753 in toto in 1682-3 and £110 in 1683-4, as well as a salary of £4 pa. During his tenure of office, he took 3 apprentices, Thomas Durham, bound in 1675, Walter Vincent in 1676 and Bartholomew Jackson in 1680. Durham and Jackson both worked at the Bridge. Joseph’s name disappeared from the Bridge Accounts on 21 June 1684 and he may have died shortly afterwards.
