Biographical Details
He was the son of Thomas Cartwright I and was apprenticed to his father on 21 January 1673. Like his father, he took an active interest in Masons’ Company’s affairs, becoming renter warden in 1704, upper warden in 1705, and master in 1710. He continued his father’s work at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, receiving a payment for mason’s work on 26 April 1710 (£11). A second payment of £5 12s was made on 30 May 1711 principally for his work on the dome. His authenticated memorials are cartouches with scrollwork and feigned drapery.
Cartwright died on 15 November, 1711, and was buried at St Mary, Rickmansworth, Herts, where a stone once commemorated him and his wife, the daughter of Roger Touchet of Rickmansworth.
