Biographical Details
An Italian sculptor, he taught Sir Richard Westmacott RA in England, before accompanying his pupil to Paris in the winter of 1792 and then on to Rome. The two were given permission to sketch in the Uffizi in May 1794. Westmacott later said of Casoni that he was ‘a native of Carrara, a man of considerable knowledge in the profession, under whom I studied sometime in England’ (letter from Westmacott to James Elmes, 25 October 1822, RA Jupp Catalogue, 6/154-5 quoted in Busco 1994, 7, 172 n22).
