Biographical Details
He signs a ‘charming’ altar tomb with a well-carved urn to Sarah Thompson at Winthorpe (1). Her epitaph begins: ‘This monitor of human instability’ which Gunnis regarded as a charming, but unexpected, way to begin a valedictory inscription (Gunnis 1968, 90). The monument to the Maltby family also makes use of an urn on a table, but with tapering columns as legs and a sarcophagus beneath (2).
