Biographical Details
Clark of Lime Kilne Lane, Bristol, was an assistant to Sir Richard Westmacott RA and the principal stone-carver employed in building Eaton Hall, Cheshire. He also did a good deal of work in his native city. In 1821 he executed a ‘very elegant canopy in the Perpendicular style’ over the effigy of John Whitson, Mayor of Bristol, itself a copy of the original of 1629 in St Nicholas’s church (2). In the following year he carved the tracery for the west window in the Lord Mayor’s chapel (5) and in 1823 received £40 for decorating the stone gallery (6). The window-tracery was removed from the chapel by the architect, Pearson in 1890 and now stands in the grounds of a private house at Henbury, near Bristol. In 1825 he worked on the Bristol Council House (7, 4). He died in 1829 and was buried in the Lord Mayor's Chapel in Bristol, where there is a monument to his memory.
