Biographical Details
In 1837 John Cochrane showed a model of a gentleman in Highland costume at the Royal Scottish Academy (1). In the exhibition catalogue his address was given as the National Monument, Edinburgh, which suggests that he was working with Robert Forrest, the custodian of the National Monument, Calton Hill, Edinbugh. Four years later Cochrane exhibited a figure of Sir Walter Scott from an address in Atholl Street, Perth (2). This was presumably the freestone statue of Scott which a Perth firm of mason sculptors, Cochrane Brothers, sold to the city of Perth on their departure for America in the 1840s.
