Biographical Details
He may be related to ‘Mr Henry Ashcroft, of Liverpool, stonemason’, who died in 1810 at the age of 70 (GM, 1810, 2, 493). Ashcroft signed a large wall tablet to Thomas Hewitt at Rostherne, Cheshire (1). He advertised from the Byrom Street Marble Works, Liverpool, in September 1819 that he had chimney-pieces fitted up in his showrooms, and ‘monuments of every description executed and designed; sculpture and modelling by artists and workmen of the first abilities’ (Liverpool Mercury, 17 September 1819). In 1825 his address was given as 66 Byrom St, Liverpool in Baines’ Gazeteer (inf Nicholas Penny).
