Biographical Details
On 3 April 1761 he received a premium of 30 guineas from the Society of Arts for a relief in stone of Regulus returning to Carthage in the under-25 class (2). He exhibited it the same year at the Society of Free Artists. Atkins was a pupil of L F Roubiliac and his name is noted on the list of those attending the latter’s funeral in 1762. He then became assistant to Joseph Wilton and, according to J T Smith, it was Atkins and Nathaniel Smith who modelled and carved the statues on Somerset House for which Wilton received the payment and the credit.
