He signs the monument at St Crux, York to Sir Tancred Robinson, twice Lord Mayor of York, who died in 1754 (1). This fine work, begun by Harvey of London and apparently designed by Charles Mitley, has a cherub holding a medallion portrait. Behind are naval trophies and below, the emblems of the Lord Mayor. In the account book of Sir William Robinson is a payment of £100, made on 29 May 1756 to ‘Mr [William] Carr [of York] and Mr Avary for finishing and putting up Sir Tancred’s monument’ (Compton of Newby Archives, in GPC).
